Technology Taking Over by Sean Pihl

1 Dec

I watched a video from the TED website called, “Andrew McAfee: Are Droids Taking Our Jobs?”  In the video Andrew talks about how technology or in the case robots is starting to become so sophisticated that it is taking our jobs.  Most people would argue that this is a bad thing that technology is becoming so advanced because robots are going to be taking over our jobs and people will not have work.  He argues that it is a good thing that technology is becoming advanced because when technology becomes more advanced it improves human life.  Technology influences the course of human life.

Andrew asked the question, “What are some of the major things that have changed the course of human history?”  Some of the answers were things like some of the great philosophers or empires.  He said that the thing that had the greatest impact on the human history was the invention of the steam engine.  It had such a great positive impact on human life because it overcame the limitation of human muscle.  He says that what we are going through right now is that technology is starting to overcome the limitations of our brains. If the power of technology increases like he says it is supposed to then in the next 6 years, technology is going to be 16 times smarter than it is today.  That is why he says, “We ain’t seen nothing yet.”

When you first think about it, a lot of people probably would not be for the idea that technology becomes so advanced that robots take over our jobs especially right now when everyone is trying to get a job.  In reality, by robots taking more of our jobs, people are going to have more time to focus on other things like reduce poverty, and learn how to improve the quality of life on earth.  It will have an overall positive impact on the course of human life.

Sean, I agree we live in a world where technology is taking over. I don’t agree where people would focus on reducing poverty because people aren’t that selfless and I think that the world would be worse with people not having work to take time away.

Sean I do agree with the idea the we live in a technology focused world, but not with the idea that it is good for people to take time off of work and do other things as you talked about. We may live in a technological world, but it doesn’t mean that we have to give away jobs from people, it should be a side step to helping build job opportunities. In truth it will actually affect the course of human life.
