Pros and Cons of Social Networking by Jennie Jaturapatporn

1 Dec

Social networking has been around for quite a while now. Websites such as, Facebook, Twitter, Tumblr, and Instagram have successfully taken over. Statistics show that in 2012 that over 56% of people use a social networking site, 54% have a Facebook, and 10% have a Twitter. The average amount of time a person spends time on their Facebook is 15 hours a month. These addictive social networking sites come with their share of highs and lows.

One of the best things about social networking is that you can keep in touch with all your friends, whether it’s someone who goes to your school or someone who lives across the world.  You can search for a person you have lost contact with over the years or create different groups to keep in touch. You can form private groups where you and your friends can discuss important aspects in the comfort of your own room. Not only can you connect with your friends, but you can also meet new people who share the similar interest as yourself. It is also a convenient way to share what is going on in your life and expressing how you are feeling. It gives the ability to share photos you’ve taken hours before with a friend from a distant corner of the world. Lastly, it is a great way to market your business or company.

However, there are many negatives that come along with social networking. Identity theft and flatulent activities are very common on these sites. There are a lot of malicious people out there who do these things by attacking other people. Money swindlers take advantage of customers by creating fraud business pages. Lastly, kids post anything they want on their page, even if it means harming others.

Every pro comes with a con, and for social networking it is definitely balanced out. Many people can have mixed feelings about whether social networking is good or not. Either way, social networking is going to be used every day by billions of people and that is not going to change.

Your paper was very interesting because I, myself, have a Facebook and Instagram; I use these networks in order to keep in contact with my friends in Texas. Even though they are very addicting, I think we must learn when to stop.

I also agree that social networking have their pros and cons. I think it is a good way for people to communicate with each other whether they are close friends or friends across the world. But social networking also has its cons because millions of people can view your personal information. Ultimately it is the responsibility of the user to use these networks maturely.

I found your paper to be very interesting and informative. As a user of social network sites, it is intriguing to realize how much of our time is dedicated to these sites whether it be to communicate with friends and family or simply to simply stay informed on other’s activity.
