Throughout the years this country has been a witness to many outstanding, inspiring, and influential musicians. Many of these musicians began their music career nothing and through their own perseverance were able to be recognized as music icons. Amongst these idolized musicians, one name stands out in the music industry. This individual is now infamous for being considered the greatest electric guitar legend, Jimi Hendrix. Despite having a less than perfect childhood, this American musician and songwriter overcame the odds and became an influential music figure.
Similar to other children, Hendrix was exposed to many difficulties at a young age. This rock guitar legend was born on November 27, 1942, as Johnny Allen Hendrix in Seattle, Washington to Lucille Jeter and James Allen Hendrix. Before Jimi’s birth his father had already been drafted into the U.S. Army and during his absence, his mother neglected Jimi. Due to his mother’s neglect, Hendrix was often cared for by relatives and by acquaintances as well. After the father’s discharge, he had trouble finding employment therefore the family lived in poverty for a period of time. To make matters worse, both parents struggled with alcohol and were constantly fighting amongst each other. Finally Hendrix’s parents divorced on December 17, 1951 and a few years later his mother passed away. Clearly, Hendrix had a troubled past to say the least.
Although Jimi lived in a family environment with struggles as a child, he found refuge in music. At the age of fifteen Hendrix acquired his first guitar and taught himself to play. From there, Jimi played with and created several bands. His career as a musician officially took off after he met Chas Chandler who convinced Hendrix to go to London. There, the legendary The Jimi Hendrix Experience was born. Hendrix’s unique sound captured many audiences and he quickly gained the admiration of many other influential bands such as The Rolling Stones, The Beatles, and The Who. His music was an instant phenomenon and he later played at the Monterey Pop Festival and the legendary Woodstock festival.
Although his life was not one without struggles, Hendrix still managed to spread his innovative guitar playing to audiences around the world and gain influential respect. Unfortunately the extraordinary Jimi Hendrix has passed away, but his music lives on.
